Guangxi has enormous potential for developing its economy. Advantages are obviously seen as the following.
Firstly, Guangxi boasts favorable geographical location. It is the only province of western China that has a coastline and a borderline. It sits right in the overlapped junction of economic rims of South China, Southwest China and ASEAN. It also serves as an important gateway for, and the most convenient passage between southwestern China and ASEAN countries.
Secondly, Guangxi is rich in natural resources. It is one of the 10 major non-ferrous metals producers in our country. Deposits of 12 mineral ores top over other provinces. Reserve of aluminum is expected to reach over 1 billion tons. This may help building Guangxi as the largest aluminum production center in China in the years to come. Apart from abundant non-ferrous metals, Guangxi is also rich in non-metallic deposits. The region has the potential to become the largest cement producer in South China. Hydropower resources constitute another shining advantage for the region, with a full-installed capacity of over 17 million kilowatts, that help to mark this region as a key base for China’s programmed project named as Electricity From West To East. The Hongshui River has a utilizable capacity of over 11 million kilowatts, is one of the three major hydropower rainages to be explored in China. The Longtan Hydropower Station, with an installed capacity of 5.4 million kilowatts and an annual output of 18.7 billion kilowatt/h, is now under construction. It will claim the second largest hydro-power complex in China only next to the Three Gorges Hydro-power Station in terms of capacity. Many other areas can be further explored since Guangxi is abundant with agricultural, forestry and marine resources as well as resources to develop animal husbandry and commercial crops.
Thirdly, Guangxi enjoys preferential policies in favor of regional ethnic autonomy, coastal and border areas, and areas covered by Western Development Program.
Our region has witnessed rapid growing industries in fields of sugar, non-ferrous metals, automobile manufacturing, machinery, construction materials, food processing and pharmaceutical production, which have laid a solid foundation for cooperation with businesses at home and abroad.
In the past few years, Guangxi has intensified its investment efforts in building up infrastructure facilities as well as projects in basic and advantageous industries in transportation, energy and telecommunications, etc. All these have given new momentums to the development of the regional economy and helped to formulate a more favorable environment for investment to Guangxi.
In the past few years, Guangxi has witnessed the fastest growth of GDP at an average annual rate of 10% or higher that has never been experienced in history. Great headway has been made in strategic economic restructuring. An economy with Guangxi's local characteristics is picking up speed. A passage to the sea has been formed with the completion of a series of important infrastructural projects. A socialist system for market economy has been initiated. An all-dimensioned opening-up layout is being shaped in the region. The people's living standards as a whole have reached the level of moderate prosperity. |
